Baron, the rottweiler mix found abandoned and severely injured with both ears and his nose mutilated, was likely a victim of dogfighting.
Dogfighting is an absolutely disgusting and inhumane practice that is unfortunately still too common in our society. Not only are the dogs forced to hurt one another, the people who fight them will often harm the dogs themselves. While the people who did this to Baron still haven’t been caught, Baron’s horrific injuries point to what is likely dogfighting. They could be have been carried out on him as punishment for losing a fight or as a crude way of treating injuries he sustained from another dog. Because of the extent of his injuries, investigators assume more than one person must have been involved:
“I have a hard time believing that one person could hold the dog, cut off both ears, cut off his tail, injure his back legs and slice off his nose without the dog biting or getting away,”said cruelty investigator Mark Ramos. “For one person to do that, they would have to struggle, and the cuts are pretty clean. I think multiple people did this, at least two.”
Yet despite all of the horrible things he’s been through at the hands of people, Baron is still a happy dog and who just found this forever home. Nearly 300,000 people have now signed our Change.org petition to help find his abuser (thank you to each and every one!) and the Michigan Humane Society has reported an outpouring of support from people around the world.
While laws against dogfighting have helped curtail the practice significantly, it still happens far too often and according to the ASPCA, it has been reported in urban, suburban, and rural settings in all regions of the country.
The reward for information leading to the arrest of Baron’s abuser(s) is now up to $40,000 and anyone with information about Baron or those responsible for his injuries should call cruelty investigators at 313-872-3401.

Dogs involved in fighting alway have bites and puncture wounds on their face, legs and chest. Baron has none of this. He is most likely not a victim of dog fighting. These injuries were done intentionally to him by at least two people.

This is a very interesting comment indeed. I didn’t know about that, nor did I see the actual photos of when he was first taken in by the Humane Society in Michigan. You do have a very valid point though. It really does lend itself towards a psychopathic type behavior. If these cuts on the ears and nose were “clean” cuts such as like a surgical cut would be than you’d be looking for somebody holding a hunting knife, which is all too common. Why did they choose an 8 yr old Rottweiler mix? Why did they do something like this? The only possible way 1 person could do this on their own was either drug the dog to a near stupor with some type of drug or restrain this dog from moving or both. The psychotic mind is really out in Left field. I’m a nurse and have worked in psych for almost 4 yrs and worked crisis intervention as well. I’ve spent another 4 years working in a county jail and have had to deal with the psychotic mind. I’m well aware of the behavior and I’ve been in situations myself where the psychotic mind takes complete control over the person. I totally agree with you with the intentional injury if there was no signs of bite marks from another dog. Even a cat would leave scratches on this dog across the nose and this is kind of normal if the dog was bugging the cat. You’d see this on the fur as well on the front legs and maybe the chest too. As I’ve said in another reply I just wonder if any of the urgent care or ER’s in the Detroit.area had any reports of dog bites during the time frame when this happened to Baron. The Humane Society can judge fairly well about how old the wounds were when the call came in for his rescue. It may have been in his best interest that it was cold because it slowed the bleeding down on these cuts. I just wonder how long it was though. I feel so bad for him having to suffer through this torture and then being dumped. Now after reconstructive surgery for his nasal passages and he found a good “furever” home he’ll need not to worry ever again!

I agree. He does not seem to have been used as a “bait dog”. His injuries are too clean. I can’t believe some people could actually hold the dog -who was undoubtedly yelping in pain- and mutilate him like that.

There was anther such incident in South America where 2 bastards cut the ears off of a dog and 1 of these bastards laid the ear down for the dog to sniff. Both displaying the knives they used. That dog was in a fight. You could see the marks on the dog’s legs for sure. This dog had been mutilated as well. This was a horrific picture to even look at. It’s disgusting that these 2 jacka$$e$ think that this is an OK “selfie”. I was appalled when I seen this. Then I ran across in my home email another story of a (F) German Shepherd that had been tortured very cruelly. She was beaten all over her body. The snapshot I received was taken from a vet’s office/surgical area and she was hooked up to an IV and intubated so she could breathe. That happened here in the US somewhere but I don’t remember where. She’s a gorgeous dog even though I only seen her laying helpless on a table receiving IV therapy and much needed oxygen therapy to save her life. When I read through that article I was appalled that someone actually not only beat her with numerous things they also sexually assaulted this dog with something as well. The vet’s found evidence of this during the exam when she was brought in and near death. As usual, somebody had called and spoke up that their was an injured dog and the Humane Society took the call and went to go pick her up. She had numerous broken bones, and deep cuts if I remember correctly all brought on by a sick human. I’ve always believed in giving your animal up if you can’t take care of it. It doesn’t mean that you are bad person, it just might be better for the pet as well. Many times people are looking for that dog that you just gave up at the shelter. I kind of wonder about some of this abuse if it’s not about the cost of keeping an animal as well. You’ve got to make a commitment for their lifetime as well, not just yours. They’ve got medical bills just like do. They can get pet insurance too. This type of mutilation has to stop and we need more laws or stronger laws against it. I have no problem with micro-chipping my pets and I think they all should be. It would at least give us a starting point as where this animal came from and follow the chain.

Who does this kind of evil to one of God’s innocent creatures??? I hope these monsters are found and dealt with accordingly…this makes me sick! I am so thankful that Baron now has a loving forever home and that he will never know this kind of pain and torture ever again. As for dog fighting..it is not a sport! It is cruelty to animals. Anyone involved in this belongs in jail for a very long time! This country needs very harsh animal cruelty laws…abusers get a slap on the wrist and are back out on the street abusing more animals in these fights, and worse….

Wow, you are so right! If makes me sick to see this type of crime going on. I’ve donated time at my local shelter and have worked with the felines because it’s what I chose to do. I’ve got 20 + yrs of experience with the cats so it was a natural choice. I’ve seen some of our dogs come in and I’ve had to walk past the stalls where the new ones have came in and they have been pretty beaten up looking. I never did ask how and why and what the story was but I knew just by the marks these dogs had I instinctively knew they had been in a fight somewhere and just recently. Many of them were on antibiotics for potential infections or the infection was already present and we were treating it. I live in a rural county in WI. So it even goes on out in “boonies”.

I have become very interested in trying to become more knowledgeable as to the laws of animal cruelty so that I may be of help in these situations. It is horrific to know that there are people (for lack of a better word) who could do something so vicious and cruel to these helpless animals HAS to be punished in the same manner and locked away for a long long time. I would like to help in any way I can.

I was attacked by a pitbull at our local kennel about 3 years ago. At the time I was volunteering as a dog-walker and the dog who attacked me was supposed to have been safe to walk. I almost lost my arm in the attack — and the dog who attacked me was probsbly put down. (I never
heard anything from the kennel again — I’m sure they were terrified I would sue them — but I know this was their policy with aggressive dogs.)
I’m sure that — like Baron — this dog had been trained to attack and to latch on: either he was a guard dog or he was used in dogfighting. Even though the attack was terrifying and I’ll have a scar forever from it,
I could never imagine mutilating a dog in the way Baron was — not even a dog who attacked me.This behavior is simply savage.

I’m so sorry to hear of your attack by a pitt bull terrier. Yes, they can be bred for fighting and can be very mean and vicious dogs. They gotten a lot of bad PR so to speak, but if they don’t have that aggressive behavior in them they tend to be more loyal. We’ve got a neighbor here that has one (female) and she’s more relaxed unless you smell like your cat then she’s sniffing you all over. Which is so true for me. When I do some volunteer time over at the shelter and the neighbor is out walking her and his pitt bull are out I’m being “sniffed out”. I’ve generally been exposed to 80-100 cats in a day in 4 rooms so even my own cat is curious. If their policy was to put down aggressive dogs, than it probably was. They probably had to isolated the dog for awhile after you sought medical treatment as this is a very serious medical issue whether you sued or not. They legally can’t sell an aggressive dog and how they got it remains a mystery. It may have been wandering the streets, caught up in animal hoarding case or whatever. They (kennel) didn’t know and you weren’t aware of this behavior either. My mother’s Doberman bit me in the ribs when I tried to walk her when my mother was is the hospital. What set that dog off was the pony tail in my hair. That dog took me down when she got me. We couldn’t tell my mother about this as she was in critical condition as it was. My brother ended up walking the dog that day. I was 400+ miles south of where I had lived with my husband. The dog was NOT trained to do this, but it happened. I ended up with a nasty bruise on the rib cage, because I happened to have on enough layers of clothing that she didn’t get my skin at all. It just didn’t make sense to me at all. One minute I was putting the leash on her, turned around to put a jacket on and almost made it to the stairs and I was attacked.

Well that’s a good question. I’m going think that the video that’s out there is to reinforce that he’s got the good home that he needed so badly. I haven’t seen it myself. I also would imagine there’s a whole lot of us that don’t personally know these lucky people to have a dog that has been through hell and back! Only heaven knows his past and humans can plan his future.

Anyone that abuses an animal like what was done to Baron are lowest of the low and cowards. If and when they are caught I do hope they are fully punished for this horrible act. Evilness like this always starts with animals and then moves on to children. I pray for their capture and punishment! It warms my heart to see that Baron has found his forever loving home, all these animals want to do is give love and receive love!

Please keep up the action to help dogs with this kind of abuse. BUT PLEASE NEVER PUBLISH PICTURES OF THEM. I BELIEVE THIS ENCOURAGES “COPY-CAT” ABUSE. I received 2 such photos on my FB. Was Baron a victim of “copy-cat” abuse?

It can be, because it’s just so common to hear of these cases. I heard of 3 of them in the past week alone. Yes, I agree with you about them being graphic, terrible and, horrific. I personally think they show the picture so we get an idea of what was done to the dog. There could be a filter set up where you could open the picture if you wanted to or not. I understand that some people can’t deal with this upsetting type of visual images and it bothers them all day long and into their sleep as well. Perhaps this site can take a little advice from the public.

I agree however that he could have lost a dog fight, my understanding is the bastards mutilate the animals when they lose to punish them, so next time they don’t lose, and yet another animal suffers. My son has a big guy like Baron, and he is a loving dog. It breaks my heart to see the cruelty done to Baron. He looks like he has new, caring masters who return his joy and love.There is no punishment sufficient to “reward” the perpetrators for their cruelty. They are lower than low (and I am struggling to hold back my rage). I trust Providence will catch up to those vermin, and give them what they deserve, three-fold.
